I agree about National Anthem if you'd remove the god reference.

Too Much Blood just doesn't stick with me, I end up skipping it a lot.

I haven't got to the point where I skip songs yet, still blasting it out in one giant sex wee. Though I'm sure when the songs get put into my random playlists, Too Much Blood and Keepsake will have the fewest listens!

I love that one, I especially like the intro guitar, it makes me think of the sixties for some reason

Blue Dahlia and Desire is the one's i've played the most because the lyrics are so easy to relate to for me right now.

I finally saw them play on Sunday (I missed my family's Thanksgiving dinner for it) with Rise Against and Hot Water Music. The venue was kind of shit though, very echo-y and you couldn't hear the lyrics worth shit. Chuck Ragan went up on stage and played The '59 Sound with the guys. I think I got a video of it too, but I can't remember. Rise Against played forever though, I'm not that huge of a Rise Against fan.

I would cut off my left arm to see them

Just checked out The Gaslight Anthem after a while of wondering who they were. Downloaded Handwritten... pretty decent record. Not a massive fan of the singer's voice though; it feels like Tim McIlrath's but a bit weaker.

I suggest checking out Sink or Swim while you're at it. It's one of their more punkier albums. Brian's voice may take some getting used to, but after a while it's like a voice of an angel.

Apart from the obvious angelic Gaslight songs, 'Cherry Blossoms' is a wonderful example of how his voice can transport you to a land of candyfloss, marshmallows and oh so comfortable beanbags... :')

Okay... so just gave the whole album a proper listen, and I retract my earlier statement. The quality of music is good, but none of the tracks have their own personal identity, so even the first two tracks are instantly forgettable. I've just heard the whole album through once roughly and once properly and I can honestly say I don't remember how any of the songs go. See, this is why musical diversity is important in an album. This has the symptoms of a typical first album (I know it's their fourth) in that everything really sounds the same - when I listen to Handwritten, I feel like the band just aren't experimenting enough with their sound. They need to branch out and touch other genres and sounds and instruments and tones, rather than stick with the same formula.

That would be Polar Bear Club.

Yeah, Gaslight's sound doesn't change as radically as Sum 41's for example, but they somehow manage to maintain that small town, working class charm to their music. For me, that's the reason The Gaslight Anthem appeals to me so much, or just music in general. I don't think diversity needs to exist as much in the scope of an album versus the scope of a band's discography. For example, did Screaming Bloody Murder really need those two rock and rollers to be liked as an album? I would've enjoyed it even if those songs never existed. Do they add more depth to the album? Maybe, but they also throw off the mood and flow. By now we're used to those songs being part of the album, but I'm sure the first listen was a surprise. Now we look at their discography and it's rich in diversity, but people may still say "that's the pop punk one, the more metal one, the dark metal one, the back to pop punk one and the dark, dark epic one". An album will still generally have one sound that encompasses it.

While the general sound of Handwritten can be taken either as lack of diversity or that the band has finally found the sound they've been looking for, they have changed their sound somewhat since Sink or Swim. They started off as more of a punk band and evolved into more rock and roll, Americana type stuff. Brian's always been inspired by The Boss.

Also, Brian is known for his ability to tell stories in his songs. Being a young guy with an old soul type of thing. I'm not even sure if a lot of the songs he writes are entirely about him but just situations with real emotions.

I suggest giving Handwritten a few more listens, even just the first two tracks. And also Sink or Swim.

I certainly will look the album over a few more times.

Personally, I do feel like the two rock n' rollers added significant depth to Screaming Bloody Murder. That's one of the reason why I loved Andros' instrumental EP so much - it was so musically diverse that even after a single listen, you could remember and easily identify each of the tracks.

Polar Bear Club and The Gaslight Anthem are better than Rise Against.
