How do you record guitar on your stuff dude? It always sounds pretty good.

Do you put a mic in front of your amp? Or do you have something like a Line 6 pod that you plug your guitar into then into the USB and it has amp emulations?

i know i'm not jeremy, but i guarantee he'll tell you that holding a mic up to an amp is not the way to go. my recordings come out sounding legit (i think :/) and i plug the guitar directly into the usb device. that's what pretty much every famous or even indie band does it.

My audio production class (college) used a mic to record guitar through the amp.

I used a Line 6 PODxt that works with a program called Sonoma Riffworks. Really basic, but it gets the job done!

I've seen lots of big bands recording with a mic in front of the amp, it's definitely not uncommon at all.

Yup, because it is comman knowledge that a line 6 usb D.I sounds a million times better than cranking up a top of the range tube amp and using a mixture of high end mics to record it with. I beleive thats how ac/dc have done it for years now...

I think more the point is you have to have good microphone equipment for it to work, and it will sound a lot better and real, but unless you have that the emulation programs do work better, my guitar teacher even admitted it was better than his stack with a decent mic in front.

There is absolutely no way that any emulation system sounds better than an SM57 ($100) in front of any half decent amp.

Actually there is, you would be surprised with the technology these days.

I really wouldn't be surprised! Have been studying/practicing production for the past four years dude, wouldn't be a fan of the processed sound of line in at all

believe it or not, most bands/ engineers nowadays (who know what they're doing) use a combination of stereo miking (2 mics infront of an amp) and a DI (digital injection).

Fuck, I did this a couple years back and it sounded decent. Plug a Guitar Hero mic into your USB port on your computer and set it in front of the amp. Set it up and test it, hopefully you find it works well enough and costs nothing at all as opposed to buying an interface and different mics.

this isn't the way to go. it's cheaper but it won't last you as long or give you nearly the kind of sound a proper mic setup will.

This is what I ended up doing, I just needed to record a couple songs so our drummer could write his part for it, didn't have to be perfect. The clean sounded really good but distortion not so good. Definitely could be better but yeah it's an easy alternative
