Hello everyone!
Basically i'm quite new to this amp-stuff since I've pretty much gone acoustic for stuff.
But i want better sound!

I would like to ask some questions to you experienced people over here, well

- What volume should the guitar be on?
- What volume should the amp be on (Master, Volume, Gain
<-- what's the difference?)
- What Gain level is preferred?
- And last but not least, what is your favourite amp setting for playing Sum 41 type of music (Treble, Middle, Bass - any pedals or other equipment?)

Just give me shitloads of tips, and it would be okay lolz.

It kind of depends on what amp you're using but i always have the volume on the guitar turned up as loud as it can get no matter what amp i use.

My guitar is always on the highest volume.
As for the volume of the amp, it depends on the amp, I never turn up the volume of my amp to the highest, I usually leave it at 3-4 because I play at home.

I have so many different sounds.. I don't have a standard setting.. I just like to screw around and create a tone I like, I have so many different effects and different kinds of distortion..

Guitar should pretty much always be on full for this type of music. Can't really think of a reason to turn it down below full.

It depends what amp you have. Tube/valve amps sound better when they're louder lol, which is bad for my parents, but oh well. Mine's usually only 1/3rd volume and it kills. I have the clean channel on full and the distortion channel on whatever volume it needs to be to be around the same volume as the clean when I switch between the two.

I made the mistake when I started playing thinking gain all the way up was the best. The truth is, having gain about 1/3 to 1/2 is the best for punk like Green Day, the Sums, blink etc. Higher gain is for metal so you can play the really fluid solos and have notes go on forever.

Usually I have my treble 7, middle 7/8, bass 9. Another mistake people make is thinking you need all treble to play lead stuff. If you see these guys live you realise their guitars have a shitload of bass on them. They definitely don't keep the bass low at all. It just makes the lead parts sound tinny.

Depending what amp you have you can use some distortion pedals. I like my amps distortion but it is a pretty good amp, for solid state small amps the pedal distortion you can get would probs be better (I recommend vox bulldog distortion, only get Boss if you're going real cheap).

For me, it's:
Guitar volume: 10
It really shouldn't be any less for this kind of music.
Amp volume: 2.5
That's just my setting. I play at home, so I can't be too loud.
Gain: 8
Don't max it out, or it'll be really overly distorted.
Treble: 9
Mid: 5.5
Bass: 8
I'm not really good at this stuff, and I just have a practice amp (it's a Fender FM25DSP so you know), but I'm just using what works for me.

These have been my settings for quit some time:

Guitar Volume: 8
Bass: 8
Mid: 4-5
Treble: 7
Reverb: 4

I also have a Line 6 PODxt that I runt guitar through with roughly the same settings as my amp.

Whoa dude, r0ck 0n!

1) Guitar vol:
Simple answer: on 10 :D
But really, if you're using a solid state amp, it shoud be on 10 (maybe on a bit lower setting for a darker tone).
With really hot pickups driving an overdriven tube amp, you can lower the distortion if you turn our volume lower. It works with a few fuzzboxes the same way.
2) Amp vol:
Tube amps: With "Gain" can be adjusted, how hard the preamp is driven. It's like the Distortion knob on stompboxes. Master determines, how much signal is fed in the poweramp. With gain on max can play distorted (preamp dist) on low volume levels. If you turn Master up, can get poweramp distortion, but it can be loud...
Solid state: Set gain and volume as it good sounds.
3) All gain levels. As far the overall sound good is.
4) The amp settings vary from amp to amp. You'll need a marshalley sound, so a Marshall amp (some oldschool stuff, like a Plexi), and a booster in front of it. Or two. Or - it depends on your budget - a good distortion pedal. An Ibanez Tube Screamer or a Marshall Guv'nor II are good choices.

And avoid the cheap digital (multi)effects! Or if you really want a multieffect, buy a Boss.
