Sum 41 - Kickstarter

Post by sumelf »

I've came with a sick idea, guys
Tyler. wrote:Does anyone know how rich the guys are? Ideally they never sign with a record label again, but considering they're not that huge any more I dunno if they could afford to pay for absolutely everything themselves. Maybe they could start a Kickstarter for their next album lol.
This idea is supposed to be a joke, but
remember sums were saying that they haven't got enough funding for new music video and so on.
What if they would start a kickstarter project to fund a new video for a song from SBM (fans could choose which one)
And we, who've got sites, pages, groups etc related to Sum 41 will spread this thing around the world.
What do you think, guys?

http://www.kickstarter.com/ is a crowdfunding service where anybody can make a project which he is going to do and ask other people for money. The point is that people first give money and then project starters use these money to bring project to life.

Projects are very different: games, apps, tech, music, movies etc.
So why not a music video?

I've already understood that not all of you may know it. I'll explain in the first comment.

To be honest, I don't think the Sums would want to shoot another video. Why would they? Yeah, Kickstarter would be a good idea if the band ever decided to self-publish an album, but that's just not going to happen (at least within the next few years).

Why not? By now we've got awesome Blood In My Eyes and cheap BYDWK (to be honest I don't consider it as a real music video) So, kickstarter project could be an interesting experiment with which we could gain another awesome fan-inspired video.

I don't want to be a downer, but I rather this be for a new album/ep.

I would really like some new music by Sum 41.

Would be good. Though I wouldn't not do it unless I got a free ticket to a show.

good idea except the fact that it costs (especially this band) over 300,000 dollars to rent a studio to record an album/EP/break shit.

That is pretty average in terms of Kickstarter funding.

Who says they still are millionaires? and even if they were, it would cost an insane amount of money to make an album and release it.

I think this is a really cool idea. I've heard of Kickstarter, just didn't know exactly what it was. And even if the guys don't need the funds, I mean, they'd surely appreciate all the help that the fans are willing to put forward for them that they would make sure a project we want to see happen, will happen.

So why would they say that shooting music video is so expensive and they won't do it?

Deryck Whibley Net Worth

http://www.celebritynetworth.com/riches ... net-worth/

If he is worth that much im sure the other two are worth anywhere from 500k to a $1.5... Music videos are expensive, but im pretty sure its more so the technical aspects they are not willing to deal with. Its a trying and tedious process when the labels not handeling it. Plus the cost are small but they add up.

Just saying though, if they have millions of disctetionary income and still say it is too expensive or "too much", then how much do yall figure theyd have to raise on kickstarter?

That be a ridiculous amount yall

This is bullshit, the exact same website says that Deryck made this amount of money in 2007, it also says that he released 9 studio albums with Sum 41.

I really think that they don't need a Kickstarter, they need motivation.

Hah, probably, do they need both motivation and money? Or money for motivation... ;)

Anyway, I think it's a great idea, I'm ready to give them some money (10-20$) just because I'm inspired by an idea. By the way, if a project is successful, every backer will get a reward (e.g. a copy of what's being made or a kind of that, signed Cds, picks, etc), so it's another great reason to back a project :)

If you think they will never get enough money for a project, surf some projects at KickStarter, you'll see, this is a possibility. Some projects got 300K$-900K$, it depends on backers, in other words - us, fans. If we decide it can fail, it will.

Trial calculation:

For example, a project needs 500K$.
Every fan can give them 5$.
So, they need 100K fans to achieve the goal.
Sum 41 twitter account has 213,611 followers.
So, it is possible. All the more so as some fans can give them more than 5$.

(This is just an example,I don't know how much it might cost to make a video).

P.S. Someone has to put the idea up to Sums, maybe they will like it. There's no harm in trying :)

For sure.
I think we don't need to argue here. We need to ask Sums about it.
