How do the Sums go about writing their songs?

Did Dave write the riffs back in the day? Did Deryck?

Does Deryck control everything?

Deryck always came up with the main idea of songs, then he would show it to the rest of the band and they'd add in their own thing.

Dave would basically do solos, but I'm sure he and Deryck would work together on some riffs of songs (ie. The Bitter End; both Deryck and Dave worked on that song).

Back in the day Deryck would write songs "he thought Dave would like to play."

But yeah, Deryck pretty much controls everything.

I don't know, I think he was in metal bands in high school, but joined Sum 41 because they were all friends. I don't think he really minded it during All Killer No Filler days, but after they got into more metal he probably was thinking the band wouldn't go backwards back into pop-punk.

Though, I'm sure the main reason he stayed for as long as he did was because they were all really good friends.

Andrew ...I understand that you want to be in a good band ...but I think that you don't have to do everything according to other bands like Sum 41 ...You should come with your own ideas ...make your band special with something ...

Deryck writes music first while singing whatever comes into his head over the top and that's how the melody comes about.

Then I guess he sits down and writes proper lyrics to the melody and fills in the gaps.

Judging by the amount of time it takes them to put out new stuff, I would say Tom Delonge does everything.

I think deryck does everything..the demos sound like he writes the real lyrics after finishing the rest of the song.
