D|----0-0-0-0---0-00000-------------------------------------|

I took music theory last year so I'm pretty sure this is right. If I messed up, feel free to correct me.

Those chords are made up of different notes. The first one contains the notes DAD, while the second chord has GCG. The structure is different because the drop D chord is a 1-5-8 chord and the one described in standard tuning is a 1-4-8 chord.

Plus, in drop D, you can increase the range of the guitar by one whole step. I guess you could play drop D songs in standard tuning if you don't have to go to the low D obtained from drop D tuning in the song.

You cannot play a low e flat or d power chord ( roots 1st and 2nd frets) in standard tuning, hence why you detune a whole step.
you have far too much time on your hands

Just to expand on what Brittany said, if you don't need to use the low D, then you can play the song in Standard. However, if the song is tuned in drop D, it most likely uses that chord anyway. Take the song Fat Lip for example. It's supposed to be played in drop D, but many people play it in Standard. I think the low D is used during the bridge after "I'm not listening" part. You can get away with playing it in Standard if you just strike the A and D strings to substitute the low D. That's how I do it anyway, when I'm too lazy to tune my guitar, haha.

I tried, but it ended up being a cluster-fuck of words, haha.

drop d is then the low E string is ca. 1 step lower than normal, but all other srings are same tuning, just the low E is down to D :winkwink:

here an example : 0 on the low E is 2 in drop d = E 0 = D 2 = this is the same^^
