The sound engineer has to care, it is his job. The webcast was not for Sum 41, it was for the whole event. It was as "free" as TV with all its commercials. But you're right, you get the impression they didn't really care about what went on the stream with all the missing stuff and mistakes in the song titles.
fergal41 wrote:They're not going to compromise their regular front of house sound or bother to set up a separate mix for the sake of a one off webcast.
You don't have to make compromises if you have a separate mix and I'm pretty sure they had one. May be it was only one engineer watching over both mixes and prioritizing the front of house. Why else would he completely forget about Steve's vocals in the most important and final song Fat Lip.
fergal41 wrote:I know what you mean about the KOC breakdown, but I don't think that was the ambience microphones picking the sound up there. That could be anything, such as a pedal's preamp not being too powerful or Tom not levelling off his clean and distorted sounds.
I think if the ambience microphones were powerful enough to pick up Steve screaming his Fat Lip vocals then every obnoxious member of the audience would be more in the mix than the band and they would have added to the guitar's level.
I meant that the front of house sound was always fine and those parts were only missing in the webstream mix, which explains why you could hear still them slightly in the distance over the ambience microphones which only record in the main speakers direction at a very low level to avoid feedbacks. Of course Steve's voice wouldn't be loud enough without amplification but why else would you be able to hear him at all if not over the main speakers? I doubt the overheads or any other drum mic would make his voice sound like that.

Also listen to the end of We're All To Blame. You can hear the clean guitars in the background, they sound fine, but are just not present in the stream.

Well, after seeing them live last Saturday, I was surprised. In a good way.

When you're in the audience, standing right in the atmosphere, it sounds pretty good actually. Not perfect, but just good.

But don't get me wrong, you're totally right when you say it doesn't sound right at all or doesn't sound that good in vids.

I recommend everyone to listen first Go Chuck Yourself Hell Song intro and then All The Good Shit Live Hell Song's intro.

One thing that I think still needs to be said: Deryck is singing very good at the moment. I hope he does not lose his voice again like during the Chuck tour where they had to cancel the show where I was about to see them for the first time.

True. Deryck's voice has become significantly better. It was awful in AKNF and GCY eras.
And even better, he sounds way better live at the venue than in the videos we watch.
I was totally surprised how good he sounded when I saw them in London, UK in early 2008, way better than in the videos of Summer Sonic and Musique Plus few months earlier.

After listening to the audio from the show and then listening to GCY/Happy Live Surprise there's a definite difference. I'm undecided on which I prefer though!

fergal41 wrote: As for the guitar tones, I'm sure Deryck being the control freak that he is has a lot of input into how their guitars sound live. Maybe it sounds great to his ears?
He is, when I was at soundcheck during the Offspring tour he personally set it, the engineer was messing with it and then he went over and changed it..lol I think the webcast has a lot to do with it sounding the way it did, if you look at some of the fan videos from the crowd the guitars sound a little different.

I can contradict everything about the guitars...

You say it prolly does not sound as bad as you might think, but i listened to that DL Sam give us, and everything iis kinda week, except for certain songs, like Fat Lip. Seems they remembered to turn it up about that time.

Though, i didn't have any trouble hearing the Over My Head intro. I dunno, i don't like to think about that much.

I don't know if this will be as good quality as on the CD, but this was where the live version was taken from.

WTF? Are you serious? It sounds awful although it seemed to be a good performance, especially the vocals.

In terms of the guitar tone though, the Orange Lounge marks one of the first performances where it actually improved since Summer Sonic 2007. It was most noticeable when they played Underclass Hero during the prechorus part. The guitar sound just had more bite to it.

As far as the vocals go, Deryck's sounded the best he ever has, especially when he sings the Underclass Hero songs. Though, I miss the days when he would strain his voice singing Over My Head. That song just sounded so much better live when he sung it like that.

Listen at 1:32 when the bridge starts. It sent a shiver down my spine the first time I heard Deryck scream "suffer". He used to sing it like that a lot during the tours in the Infected era.

Maybe the best live version of Over My Head, Derycks voice and the guitar sound is just awesome.

Then again, Thanks for Nothing is really great to. I miss this, ahh, great times.
