It goes like this...they had a good start with half hour of power and took it even further with all killer no filler. i have to admit, i did enjoy that ska-like track in half hour of power (second chance for max headroom).
then something went wrong.
does this look infected? was good, don't get me wrong, but it seemed to be lacking something. mabye it was the style or genre change that threw me off but it seemed like something was missing.
then chuck came out and pretty much confirmed that thought. chuck was a decent album, at best. in a sense, sum 41 threw themselves into some sort of no-man land with that album cause the style of playing could be considered along the lines of metal but would never be accepted into the metal community. and the punk community (or whats left of it) wasn't gonna take 'em because of that new sound.
I'm just hoping that their new album will bring em back to their roots, back to when the first hit the mainstream scene with all killer no filler. so far, from what they've released, i'm very pleased. i just hope the rest of the album doesn't spoil it.

There should be like one thread for the huge opinion thing because these pop up everywhere.
You have a right to your opinion but honestly I think that they'll keep going and changing their music at every album so they'll develop new fanbases everytime. I don't see it as a "rise and fall" because as long as a band is in business and selling then they're doing well for themselves.
I don't judge music on what kind of music it is rather than it's sucess with the public because you can release a very simple song but with the best marketing techniques, you'd be surprised what can sell.
I think what is the most important is if the band is happy with their acheivements. Some people underestimate that and it is exactly what the dilema with Dave was. He wasn't so he left! Because I can't stand "fans" who just decide they are the ones who determine what theband comes out with next. They have an influence of course but really it's all up to the band.

I didn't like Half Hour of Power that much. All the songs I really liked on that track were T.H.T, Makes no Difference, and Machine Gun.
For All Killer no Filler I didn't really like the slow songs because they sounded kind of lame, because at that point when I had really liked Sum 41 I was listening to stuff like Marilyn Manson and Slipknot.
On Does this Look Infected? I guess I'll agree that it wasn't that great, but there were still some good songs. There may of been a few things missing.
On Chuck that wasn't really my favorite, it was heavier and stuff, but it still seemed to be the beginning of the type of music that more bands started playing. It really got annoying because it didn't sound as original as it did when it came out.
Now Underclass Hero, is good in my opinion. I'm not a fan of the beginning in Best Of Me, but I still like the whole album. I wish I could of gotten the Japaneses one, but my dad said hell no.

slipknot to sum41....diverse,lol....I only really like duality and my plague. and to stay on topic...TC I dunno if your listening to any songs from the album besides underclass hero, but you should dl the bonus tracks, no apologies should definetly be a 'normal track'-for lack of a better termUnderclassHeroine wrote:I didn't like Half Hour of Power that much. we obviously have very different views on the music world. with me, i think bands should stay loyal to the fans. i'll admit, i did find sum41 when they made it big with All Killer No Filler so i can't say that i'm from the beginning, but i think that the bands should take into consideration their original fan base. a direct change in style of playing, something that their old fanbase might not like, is like a slap to the face (in my perspective).Elise41 wrote:There should be like one thread for the huge opinion thing because these pop up everywhere.

I was sad that dave left but i understood that he wasn't happy. I'm following what he's doing with "The Brown Brigade" and hopefully he'll have fun with that he's doing.
And yes it is up to the band to make the decisions on what they produce next, but that doesn't mean they should forget about the fans opinions. Afterall, if it wasn't for them, they wouldn't be where they are now.

I thought that Half Hour Of Power and All Killer No Filler is when sum41 was at its best. not taking anything away from does this look infected? or chuck, i just think that jump from the pop-punk sound to something more heavy took some getting used toUnderclassHeroine wrote:I didn't like Half Hour of Power that much. well i don't have anything against those albums...i thought that chuck had the most skill overall but there seemed to be something else lacking it in.Kano wrote:please on then very first comment i have nothing againts u not liking chuck and does this look infected but those two albums had musical talent on them like hell song pieces and more but those two albums actually had alot more meaning than all killer no filler and half hour of power( dont get me wrong i still loved those albums as much)
the same thing could be said for does this look infected? but DTLI wasn't really lacking much.

i guess thats where we differ...i'm surprised you still listened to them after not getting into their early stuff...but then again, our opinions reflect our preferred genre of rock.Brownsound wrote:i wasnt to turned on by HHOP...AKNF was great but i dont listen to it much...

I don't think that the band should feel the need to hold themselves back just to please their original fanbase. I think it's good that they take risks and for the most part, it's for the better. It's up to them to decide where they want to go with their career, not us.whatthefruit wrote: we obviously have very different views on the music world. with me, i think bands should stay loyal to the fans. i'll admit, i did find sum41 when they made it big with All Killer No Filler so i can't say that i'm from the beginning, but i think that the bands should take into consideration their original fan base. a direct change in style of playing, something that their old fanbase might not like, is like a slap to the face (in my perspective).

It's his opinion there are no facts in cases like this. You can't say for a fact that Chuck is better than Half Hour Of Power as it's only your opinion. For example I like Half hour Of Power far more than All Killer no Filler but if you ask most fans they seem to think All Killer is one of Sum's best album's.But I'm not going to say to everyone "what the fuck HHOP is much better" music is about expression and when people try to force opinion onto others as facts it turns into competition.
Anyway why would a band have to take their fanbase into account as a major factor when making an album? I personally couldnt give a shit if Sum 41 made a dance album as long as they were happy.I wouldnt see it as them betraying their fans or anything like that because they've given so much to us and have never been sell-outs.
