Fender Tele or Gibson SG?
I'm thinking of getting a new guitar but I can't decide which one of these two.

Re: Fender Tele or Gibson SG?
Which modeltypes are we talking about? Because a Gibson Faded SG doesn't compete with any Fender Telecaster at all. If you'd go for a Gibson Custom SG(Les Paul) Maestro, you should pick that one. High end Gibsons are always a good pick. Low ends like the Faded models pretty much suck for the buck. High end Epiphone is better.

Re: Fender Tele or Gibson SG?
Its very dependent on what sort of stuff you play, Ive got one of each and the tele is much more versetile but If you want the crank the gain you may be better of with the sg.
Just try ewm both out and see which feels right for you.

My masters are Reem and Aaron and they are awesome. My awesome n00b is Gutter Dreams. Don't mess with them.

You can get really good Telecasters for way less than the price of a standard SG. I would suggest either the '72 Telecaster Deluxe or the '72 Telecaster Thinline.

Re: Fender Tele or Gibson SG?
The 72' Deluxe Tele is the only good looking Tele in my opinion. It's got a good sound..
But I think overall if you're looking at playing lead guitar or not getting a 72' deluxe then the SG would be a better choice because I think it has a really amazing sound.

seems to me that the only way you're going to know for sure is when you try them out at the store.

Re: Fender Tele or Gibson SG?
I love the SG's my self, mostly becuz my uncle has alot of them. But I got a G-400 ephi with EMGs, its amazing it costed less than $500 and it plays like most SGs. (G-400's are ephi's verson of the gibson SG)
[The EMG g-400 is a limited addition so I dont think they sell it any more]

Went to a music store earlier today and tested them. It's gonna eb a Tele because it has a scratchier sound if you understand and seems better to play with heavy distortion.

get a standard mexican or american tele. the only down side to getting a tele these days is the prices have gone WAYYYY up. its like $550 for a std mexican tele now!
the '72 tele isnt even good imo. the neck is really wide and weird and it sounds way to twangy. the only thing i like about it is the body cut.

But isn't the twang the thing that's so great about the Tele? Or is it twangier than twangy?kevin5064 wrote:get a standard mexican or american tele. the only down side to getting a tele these days is the prices have gone WAYYYY up. its like $550 for a std mexican tele now!

Yeah, as for prices, on the Musician's Friend website, the '72 Telecaster Deluxe used to be around $600 - $700, now it's shot up to $900+.
Re: Fender Tele or Gibson SG?
the '72 has way too much twang imo. and like i said the neck feels really really weird. a standard tele is much easier to play with and has a more solid tone.Jeremy Kill wrote:But isn't the twang the thing that's so great about the Tele? really i would recommend going to a guitar store and try all the teles and sg's out and decide. because at the price of the guitars right now you wouldnt want to make a mistake.
i was thinking about buying a '72 tele custom (the one with the single coil in the bridge and doesnt have the c-shape head stock) and thought it seemed great then i tried it and it was awful. im glad i tried all the guitars out and my next guitar will be a std mexican tele. once the prices go down

Re: Fender Tele or Gibson SG?
I like the standard a lot more because according to me it has a crunchier tone.
