2nd Telecaster Build

Post by Nic »

I'm sure no one has noticed, but I haven't been posting a whole lot recently ( :silly: ). I've been off in the real world, doing that school thing, socializing, and the like. One of the things I have been doing over the past year, is building my second Telecaster. This one, I based off a '72 Tele Deluxe - also played by Deryck. Really, it shouldn't have taken a year, but it did due to me not having the cash flow to do it all at once. I bought the parts piece by piece, over time. I picked out each and every individual electronic and hardware piece to suit my liking. I am extremely satisfied with how it turned out (it sounds SICK!).

Ok, before a couple photos, let's break down the fucker.

Body:
Fender Walnut Tele Deluxe Body

Neck:
Fender Tele Deluxe Neck (I'm at school right now and don't have the guitar with me, but the neck is some special "anniversary" model - just can't remember what year).

Bridge:
Callaham Vintage Hardtail Bridge (an awesome little piece. So much better than a stock bridge)

Pickguard:
Terrapin Custom B/W/B (I had this custom cut so I could mount the input on the PG and only have a tone and volume control - Thanks for recommending Terrapin, Jeremy!)

Electronics & Controls:
After a ton of research, I found that 500k pots are the way to go for a Tele Deluxe, rather than the stock 250k's. I purchased my CTS pots and a .022 mfd Sozo capacitor from Callaham (love buying from this guy). Turning the knobs with the CTS pots is just so much smoother. As for the volume and tone knobs, I picked up one standard Tele Deluxe tone knob and then a flat top for the volume. I really like having two different style knobs. It makes your guitar that much more different from a stock model.

Neck Pickup:
Seymour Duncan SH-1 '59 Model

Bridge Pickup:
Seymour Duncan SH-14 Custom 5

These two pickups really compliment each other. They bring life to this puppy. Who wants photos?

Looks great! Not the body color I'd pick but it's not horrible.
Love the headstock, that one is just way better than the fucking ugly standard tele headstock

I love the colour of the body, however I'm not loving te two different knobs and the input jack on the top. I hope to build my own tele and tele deluxe one day as well.

How much did it cost to build?

It's fun as hell and the finished product brings so much more satisfaction than just buying a guitar. It makes you appreciate your battle axe so much more. :winkwink: Found the neck on eBay. Also picked up the body on eBay.

Roughly $1000 USD. A pretty penny. The other Tele, you see in the last photo, set me back $1400 USD. #bentover

That Walnut body is soooo sexy! You should post a vid so we can get a feel of the tone coming out of it!

Red/maroon one isn't the best looking guitar I've ever seen, but I like the other one, cool stuff dude. I'm too lazy to do this, I just buy my guitars all finished for me...haha.
