Buying a New Guitar (?)

Post by Dylan »

im thinking about getting a new guitar in the near future. I would like an electric that can double as a decent acoustic-ish guitar. Is a semi-hollow body guitar a good substitution, such as an Epiphone DOT or a Gretsch of some kind? The catch is, i don't want to spend two thousand dollars on a guitar. I've seen some, well MOST, gretsch guitar that are that price. Im not gonna spend that much on one guitar, i might as well buy two guitars, one electric one acoustic, if im gonna spend that much.

What do you mean an "acoustic guitarish"? One that is loud without being plugged in?

i have a gibson dot... if you want a nice acoustic sounding electric guitar, they're ok, but i'm sure there must be better... Saying that tho, mine has some fairly nasty pickups in it which dont really "do" clean...

and don't ever buy a telecaster. Ever.

If you want a semi acoustic, Gretsch do have cheaper models but I've never tried one. I have an Epiphone Casino, it wasn't too expensive and it sounds pretty good unplugged (and it's loud) and sounds good plugged in.

Best advice is to just go to a shop and try one.

Like a '52 Vintage Reissue!

Then again, that's pretty expensive too.

This:
http://www.gretschguitars.com/gear/inde ... duct=G5120

Has a great unplugged sound, a nice southern rock tone and a kickass distortion. Plus its only about $600-700

so, i went into Long+Mcquade and StJohns and the only one that really stood out to me was a 72 tele deluxe road worn olympic white. they didn't have any gretsch or stand-out epiphone semi-hollow, and the semi-hollow tele standard wasn't as amazing as i thought it would be. the deluxe was well over nine hundred, so i still don't know.

i also tried out some basses, and holy shit, ernie ball sterling 5 string bass = jizz ALL OVER THE PLACE.

There should be no mention of Fenders anywhere on this thread.
Thumbs up at whoever mentioned Gretsch though, those are quality.
