There's just a lack of interest to stay current. And you can say that about the band, management and label in relation to Sum41.

Ultimately, news outside of touring comes down to Deryck, who isn't speaking up like he use to and neither is anyone else on his behalf, like Matt. So we don't know what he's been doing in terms of Sum41 plans.

I think many promo opportunities were missed on a great album. I also think the BIME video is irrelevant at this point to anyone besides fans. The promotional timing has been completely off for this album in every way, beginning with the push back of a Fall release right after the leak of Skumfuk.

For now, I think we should be happy for Gob and OpMd, that they have plans and possibly new music coming out

Well I stand by what I said, but I think some of you are being too pessimistic about this whole thing. The most likely state of affairs is that the band will release this video soon, take some time out over the summer, and then go back to touring again later this year. To be honest I'm not surprised the band want to take a break. They've actually been touring a lot recently (until Deryck's back problem took over a few months ago) - especially in Europe. I think they've toured there about 3-4 times since the album came out a year ago (even though they are yet to visit the UK). As for new material, I can't see the band releasing anything any time soon. SBM took them 4 years following UH, so future releases will probably take a similar amout of time (at least 2-3 years) owing to how much momentum the band have lost recently. While I can see a hiatus as a possibility, I don't see anything major happening to the band. The problems they've been faced with recently aren't problems within the band, but external problems beyond their control (eg. Deryck's health, no promotion). Just chill out and see what happens.

I genuinely wonder what would happen if they did break up.. I can't imagine Stevo or Deryck doing anything else.

Well, I guess Stevo would direct some videos. And Deryck could be very busy producing, writing songs for other artists, and do some solo stuff that he would release whenever he wants.

Alright, my opinion:

I think their touring depends a lot on Stevo. Guy's a father, who would wanna tour all year when having baby at home? Good parenting requires to actually be there for the kid! At the same time, Deryck's back hurts so after month or two of touring, he needs his rest. Of course being drunk all the time doesn't help, but it numbs to pain. It's pretty much like a cycle.

As for Deryck not talking and basically not appearing in interviews... kinda sucks. I think he's just tired of boring interviews and having to answer same questions all over again. Who wouldn't after 10 years of press! Then again, when he says it's all about fans, he maybe could afford 5 minutes to answer interview Heather sent him million times...

Deryck hyped UH a lot and when it came to SBM, he tried to be very careful with his words since he didn't want to disappoint people, didn't want to hype too much. And after the big break up, he basically became a lot more introvert than he used to be. Imagine getting questions of your ex every time you go out? haha.

So I think they're doing fine and we'll definitely hear new Sum 41 material in the future. Will it be 2013 or 2016? Who knows. Best thing that could happen to them would be getting rid of Island and finding label that is motivated to promote them. I guess the huge record deal sounded good back in 2001 but I think they're kinda regretting it now...

This.

But, correct me if I'm wrong, I believe the Sums still owe Island one more record.

he fucking deserves it though. if he didn't like being attacked by dumbass paparazzi every time he went clubbing, he wouldn't live in LA. i hate to say it, but Deryck has become too "hollywood" for Sum 41.

if they do write a new album, they need to relive what made them love making music together. they need to write songs TOGETHER. they're all capable, Deryck needs to let go of the reigns and they need to be a BAND.

I totally agree with you : i remember some months ago a guy posted a video of the Epic 2003Tokyo concert on Dave Facebook profile and he commented " Ah, back when we were hungry !" . This comment made me reflect on the band actual situation, i don't see the guys, especially Deryck, really into what they're doing now and maybe this is caused by the total lack of attention by the media. For a band that have sold milions of records, that have had magazines covers(on the most important music magazines), videos on tv and songs on the radio, topped the charts all over the world, i think is not easy to be ignored as they're right now (even in their own country). I hoped the Grammy thing was positive in this sense, but nothing. They had great expectations with UH and it went bad, especially with the critics. Then SBM, that was/is a total commercial failure. They need to take a break and think what is the best direction to choose for the future. As you said they need to be a BAND again.

^ I can't imagine anything of the like or what they'd be doing, but I know what I'd be doing; having a breakdown. Haha. We know music is their lives and Sum 41 isn't going anywhere -- Just gotta get back into it, hopefully the fall. Cause I'll wait to the end of the year at the latest, although by this point I'm just having serious Sum withdrawls.

That's depressing, I hope Deryck will write some new stuff in the summer, maybe we'll even get an album in 2013. I mean, he'll have a lot of free time now, he should write.
I actually had a dream a few days ago that I saw on their Facebook page that they broke up and it was like NOOOOO.

That's very optimistic. Even too optimistic for a guy that should already know Sum 41. :silly:

2014 at its earliest.

After looking at this again- I do think we're kinda overreacting here. Yea, SBM is a commercial fail- but honestly I'd rather have a golden album than a mediocre album with music video's and tours. Unfortunately- the way the music industry is these days, we cant have them both. And it's not like SBM went nowhere! It's just being compared to UH's success because it was the follow up.

Cone said Sum's weren't touring for THREE months....THREE MONTHS! Sum 41 has gone much longer than 3 month's before. If you think they're doing nothing- then you're just assuming that the only thing important in their lives is Sum 41. Stevo's a father god dammit!!

How do you expect Deryck to have energy if no one really cares (besides the fans) about this new record? Not to mention his back. And everything else that's been happening to him lately. Deryck deserves some time off! Especially with his injury in which a lot of you seem to be overlooking.

Sum 41 isn't dead. They just need a break. So lets give them one like loyal fans.

On one hand, I think you're right, then again... let's think about it. It's true that UH and SBM took alot of time to make, but think about the fact that they been on a break basically since last August, returned for a few shows now in April, and now they're back on a break again until at least September, so it's almost a year of nothing musically wise. I mean, I bet Deryck been getting treatment for his back and all (or just partying alot haha), but I think it's still a lot of time and who knows, maybe I am being too optimistic, but what if he actually wrote some songs already and gonna write more during the summer, and maybe they'll decide to make a record fast this time, like they did DTLI and Chuck. I mean, Chuck was also a pretty fast in the making record (two year wait between DTLI and Chuck) and it was also awesome. It all actually depends on Deryck, but I think with the time he has, plus the fact that the SBM tour is kinda over now, they should focus on releasing something new to keep the momentum, cuz the BIME video is kinda irrelevant now, and doing a full Canadian/US tour in support of SBM in the fall, will be a year and a half too late, so they should tour again, but after doing a new album, maybe they'll also think about that, and maybe even start recording next year or whatever.

That'll be my thinking, anyway, If I was in Deryck's position. Of course, I don't say rush anything, but with Deryck's creative mind, I'm sure he had a lot of time to write tons of songs, without just making himself rush a bunch of songs for an album. Worst case, they should do an EP.. the idea after UH was to release an EP fast, without waiting years between albums.

I agree! It was a downer at first but now that we're actually being a bit optimistic and yet realistic it kind of gives me that new material excitement even though they are going nowhere so far ! :silly:
