13 Voices- 1 year later...
Overall I absolutely love the album. I admit it took some time for some of its aspects to grow on me.
As far as the music, here's the best way I can put it: if you were to take Sum 41, Metallica, and Linkin Park, and mix them all together but still have it maintain that edgy punk-rock sound that Sum 41 has always been known for, you basically have 13 Voices.
As far as the lyrics, I get a strong sense of the pain Deryck felt from what he went through. And every time I listen to the album, I hear something in the lyrics I didn't hear before. They are so deep and personal. And I've heard Deryck mention a few times what some of the songs are about, which helps me understand them better and possibly relate them to anything I might be going through in my own life.
My favorite song is definitely Twisted By Design. I don't quite know how to explain it, but I feel like Deryck is talking about me in this song. He said in an interview something along the lines of "it's about who I am as a person. Despite all that I've done and everything I've been through, even though I've learned from my mistakes, I'm still a little messed up. It's just the way I am." That's EXACTLY how I feel about myself- despite learning from some mistakes I've made in the past and becoming a much better person in more ways than one, I still feel I come off to those around me as "I'm not going to change myself just to satisfy you. This is who I am, take it or leave it." And this is captured in the song's bridge: "In some ways I've changed and I've left it all behind. But I can't change the way that I'm twisted by design."
