That's because Dave Grohl takes recording seriously.

Honestly, what did you expect? I expected just this and I loved it!
Less focus on trying to be cool and more focus on the art. Show more footage of recording or jam sessions where they are churning out ideas. Maybe explain the idea behind each song and each member could have given their thoughts on the songs and what was going on in their minds. If they cut out all the party footage and put it more info, I would have enjoyed it. I really enjoyed the doc up till the party bit because it was informative and interesting. Then it fell off the cliff and I was forcing myself through hoping for something else I found interesting.

The only tidbit I found interesting during the whole party fiasco was that D likes to be alone while recording vocals. I should be able to learn more than that =/

It would've also been cool to see some early ideas for some of the songs...
The point Deryck was trying to make was that he really didn't go through these conventional writing processes while making songs. They all just sorta came. As for the others, apart from C-Sides & 'Panic Attack', they had very little real input into the writing, simply the recording. I think it was a perfectly accurate representation of what was genuinely going on. The only missing piece would of course be Deryck's personal writing, recording & producing sessions, which he kept entirely to himself.
He wrote the general idea of those songs, not full songs.. so they definitely jammed to work out parts of the songs

This is very very true. But we were promised a video about how Sum 41 made the record, and they showed just that. If the rest of the band didn't have much to do with any of it then it certainly showed through this. I enjoyed the video alot.

people need to realize that for alot of bands whose frontman is the singer/guitarist/pianist/songwriter, it's essentially their band. sum 41 is deryck's band, just as coldplay is chris martin's, the smashing pumpkins are billy corgan's, sublime was brad nowell's, etc. either way, i thought the documentary was ok, although i wished they spent some time explaining specific songs, rather than the album as a whole the entire time.

Sorry for multi-quoting, but these are exactly what I was thinking.
I really enjoyed the video from start to end. This gave me a very detailed look how the recording process went. Of course there should've been more footage of the actual recordings, but I wouldn't call this a disappointment.
And it was really nice to hear about Matt's role in the studio. :silly:

What did you guys honestly expect from this?
It's Sum 41.
First you guys were complaining that in the trailer, all you saw were clips that you've already seen, now when you actually get the video, WITH ENTIRELY NEW FOOTAGE, you complain cause it's not what you expected.
Boo hoo, cry me a river.
I for one, liked the video? Why? Cause it was Sum 41, I don't care how they recorded a record, I just like watching them trash shit and act like rock stars, cause I'm a fan.

It was pretty cool. Yeah, I was disappointed about the very little recording footage and all, but just from seeing the trailer I knew what to expect, and I knew it would have a lot of partying footage so it's not strictly an album recording documentary. Of course, I would've love to see more footage from the studio, more stuff with Cone and Steve, and the vocal recordings but it is what it is, and that's how SBM was recorded. Of course, the UH making of was better in terms of actual album documentary about the whole recording and some info about songs.

Btw, It looks like Tom recorded guitars for TFYTG and Baby cuz he was there in these last minute sessions to record them and it looks like they recorded them in a raw live rock'n'roll fashion, with everyone live in the room and all.. so looks like Tom was there too.

Could be. But I believe that was the first time they played those songs, so they tried to work out the song to be recordable. So even if Tom was there, it doesn't mean he recorded the guitars on the album. But at least he was there to pre-produce those songs.

I really liked it. Then again, I went in without any expectations really.

I don't feel like I've seen something new.

I thought I would, but I kinda knew how this album got written/recorded/drunk.

Well, I don't understand much English, but I could not understand most things, but that's not the case.

I really liked the documentary, shows that Sum 41 is VERY different from many bands in the studio. I do not care if they drink too much or had many parties, they're just showing how it was for real.
They made a great album and are happy with it and I'm also very pleased with the outcome.
I liked the comments from Todd, Matt, John and others ..
It was a very real documentary.

i was gutted

making of UH was better with them jamming and taking about the songs and cone gettin shit for his parts

i wish it showed them disscussing parts with gill ... or D explaining and showing the new tracks and letting us see the jams and live raw early versions of the songs~

the rockstar drinking thing has been done to death .. in "the first online show evvverrrr" lol and ITD and the updates

yeh we get it they love to party .. we know this ... seems more of a gimmic now

i was soooo hoping for the real making of the album .... wanted to see vocals getting done ... more tracking footage and experimenting with tones ect
