Like ball sports? or maybe something more 'Hands on'? Talk here! But remember, porn is NOT a sport.

Football (Soccer For You Yanks) Season 2009/1010

Post by Bobbyjames »

it's getting to that time of year again, so I thought I'll get the thread going now. Instead of me and Andrea talking about English and Spanish football in 2 different threads, I think it will be easier if we just talk about it in one! basically, just use this thread to talk about anything football for the upcoming season. League, Cup, Champions League.

Andrea, this thread will probs be only us 2 again! oh, and some crazy Michael Owen fan.

EDIT: when I'm on my lunch today, I will update this first post with some info about some of the European leagues. If anyone here wants to talk about leagues I havn't mentioned, then just post some info about it and join in the discussion! I do follow a few leagues through Europe so I'm all for talking about most leagues! If anyone has something they want to add to the info I have already posted about a league, just post it in the thread and It might get added to this post!

English Premier League
The English Premier League is set to begin on August 15th 2009, with all the clubs involved during the fist weekend. Man Utd are defending champions (again) and are favourites to win the league along with Chelsea & Liverpool, with close competetion from Arsenal, Man City, Tottenham, Everton & Aston Villa. Last season Newcastle, Middlesbrough and West Brom were relegated into the Championship. The 3 newly promoted clubs this season are Wolves, Birmingham & Burnley.

Spanish Primera Division (La Liga)
The Spanish League is set to begin on 29th August 2009. Barcalona are defending champions this year after convincingly winning the title last season. Barca & Real Madrid are probably favourites for the title again this year. One of the main talking points through the summer has been the transfer market, with Real Madrid splashing out huge amount of money for new players like Ronaldo & Kaka. Last season Real Betis, CD Numancia & Recreativo De Huelva were all relegated with Xerex CD, Real Zaragoza & CD Tenerife taking their places.

Italian Serie A
The Italian League kicks off on 23rd August 2009. Inter Milan are the defending champions this season who are favourites to win the league again along with AC Milan & Juventus. The new teams for this season are Bari, Livorno & Parma.

Dutch Eredivisie
The Dutch league will start on 31st July 2009. Ajax & PSV will be looking to improve on their poor season last year where AZ won the title. VVV-Venlo & RKC Waalwijk are the newly promoted teams this season.

I'm bored now, I'll do more later if I can be bothered.

what? lol

and I wouldn't get to cocky about winning the Champions League in Madrid this year. Last year we let you have it, so this year we're gonna take the title again. Number 6. OOOOOO YEA!!!!

I'm pretty shcoked the deal between you and Inter went through actually, don't know if it's good business or not yet. Eto'o was an awesome player for you, a proven goal scorer and a good professional. But Ibrahimovic is also an awesome player, one of the best in the world imo. hopefully he will be able to addapt his game to the Spanish style of play quite quickly and prove to be one of the best players in the league. and you neeeeeeed/haaaaaaave to beat Real to the title again this year!

Looks like Alvaro Arbeloa is on his way to Real as well, which will be a shame for us, but we could do with the money to strengthen our squad in other areas. I'm hoping Xabi Alonso doesn't leave for Real either. He's one of my favourite Liverpool players, such a good passer of the ball and one of the hardest working team players I've seen in a Liverpool shirt for a while, he's such a vital player in our team.

I'm not getting involved in the "football - soccer" aruegument again.

we call soccer football becasue you KICK A BALL WITH YOUR FOOT, FOOTBALL, BALL, FOOT, FOOTBALL, GET IT?

it's like us calling baseball a chicken.

and don't start with the "man game" shit. us Brits also play Rugby. Rugby is a mans game. now I'm not sayin your football is not a "mans game", cos from watching it and loosely understanding the rules of the game, I can see why they wear all the body protection and helmets.

I'm going to get Jake to give me MOD powers just in this thread, so I can ban Americans who come into this thread to purposely comment on American football being better than proper football and how proper football is really called soccer.

rant over. love you. =]

I'm pretty surprised over it too. I wonder who Rafa is going to put as central midfielder now when Xabi is going to Real. Kind of excited about Zlatan's move to barca too. I wonder if he's gonna be as good as he was in Inter or if he's gonna suck like he does in the ational team.

with Xabi's departure there are a few players we have been linked with. personally I want us to gte David Silva, but that won't happen. or Ashley Young, which also won't happen. guess we will just have to wait and see.
