DCODE FEST 2012

1. Happy (Belated) Birthday! Do anything to celebrate?

My birthday was great this year my family made the whole weekend a party. It was good to see all of them again. Especially all my new cousins from pregnancies and weddings.

2. "In The Mouth Of Badd(d)ness" is scheduled to release in the Fall. We're sure many fans have already heard the five songs released online, which sound great, by the way. What can fans expect of the rest of the record?

The same thing we cut the record so it is a 45 minute experience of intensity mixed with laughs and lessons. There are some good stone grooves on this one as well. With a little sample of our funk influences.

3. What is the songwriting process for Brown Brigade?

Well Vaughn and I will get together sometimes after we write a riff or before that we feel is worth writing further. I've actually never asked Vaughn how he writes riffs. When I am inspired it's usually with a rhythm with no notes. Notes with me get added in after the fact. I've always been more attracted to rhythmic music since I can remember. For example, If given a choice I would rather listen to James Brown then the Beatles. No insult to the Beatles it's just that James lyrics are easier for me to relate to. He was a father to me in the fact that he taught me about racism and its ill effects.

4. How was your experience recording this album? Did it feel very different from making any Sum 41 records? We've heard you recorded it in your own basement.

No. Actually we recorded an Ep called "Appetizer for Destruction" in my basement. All of our website content will be recorded in my basement. This includes guest singers on the instrumentals of our album, funk, reggae and whatever else we feel like writing. All besides our actual album in stores will be available on our website in hidden link fashion. Yes all of our free music is hidden on our site. For example right now I'm trying to get a punk rock EP off of the ground. I wrote it for my friends in sum as a memoir of our time together. As for the recording process on "In The Mouth Of Badd(d)ness" We went to a studio. It was different from the sum record as we didn't time our record as much as past records I have performed on. The overall quality of our sound is more low fi as well. Not on prupose, it's just how the tones in our head came out. So it's quite different but the end result is the same as any record I have performed on. I am very happy.

5. How about touring? You guys plan to travel the world?

We dream of touring the world. To visualize it would be amazing. Regardless we will go out for so long I hope to not recognize my hometown when I get back.

6. Tell us about the "Brown Knight"...is he the next Edward the Great?

Edward is a kind man The Brown Knight is our beacon of Unity and peace. We decide to write a story around him to help with questions. It gets very nerdy so if you are "too cool" go listen to "Panic At The Disco" He is a samurai in a world based on musical genres replacing countries. So the queen is the queen of pop. She has been turned evil (all puns and parallels are intended in the story by the way) There is a blues realm resembling New Orleans, A hip hop realm resembling New York and La in the proper beginnings. basically his story is an analogy for the world we live in. It's an attempt to teach people about the power or corruption and the destruction of our earth for profit.

7. Speaking of Iron Maiden...what made you decide to do a cover of them? Why did you pick Hallowed by thy Name? Has this song been a favorite of yours for awhile and how has it inspired you?

I have been playing Hallowed Be Thy name for years now. I really enjoy that song. It's funny, while I was in Africa during the conflict that broke out between Rwandan militiamen and the Congolese army that song was in my head a lot. It was the first song I listened to when I got back to the hotel in Uganda. I absorb the lyrics as a lesson to all of us afraid of death.

8. Sum 41's latest record "Underclass Hero" came out on July 24th. Have you heard it yet? If so, what do you think of it?

Yes I finally heard it two days ago. It finally sounds like Deryck has accepted what he loves to write and did it. I'm proud of the guys.

9. Deryck tells us of a band conflict back in 2001. Can you tell us what happened?

Not sure what he's talking about. My feelings of leaving had started after the first demos for Chuck were released. These things are up to people to ask though. Otherwise as humans it seems people like to fill in the blanks with their own fantasies.

10. In addition, does Deryck's discredit of you working on Sum 41 albums bother you at all?

No. It's his way of protecting his baby. I would never take offense. To start an argument on this fact would be childish and disrespectful to a part of my family.

11. We've heard you're friends with Tom of Gob...have you talked to him since he joined the band as a touring guitarist?

I have looked up to Tom's playing since we first toured with Gob. He is an amazing guitar player and an even better friend. There will always be love for Tom and all of Gob.

12. What is the thing that keeps you playing? Fans' reaction to your music, a chance to play in front of a big crowd or something else?

Music in general, it's in my head 24 hours a day. (No Ipod required for this) There is no real reason. Sometimes it can be a curse with how guilty you feel for going somewhere like the zoo when you could be practicing for that extra couple of hours. But it's all for nothing just a means to express my mind. I suppose that's why I feel so feeble comparing my expertise to that of a physicist.

13. Have you ever been back to Guyana to visit family or on vacation? Any highlights?

Yes, I did go back to Guyana. Some of the highlights were watching a bull mount a cow on our front lawn. I saw first hand how meat is processed in a third world country. It's processed downstairs. My poor sister thought we had bought a goat for her. I also fell in love with a girl and gave her my watch. Two weeks later a letter came with her message of leaving me with the watch in the letter. Heartbreaking I know. Fox is turning it into a movie starring the dude in Harold and Kumar.

14. What musical achievement are you most proud of?

Achievements mean nothing to me. They are just passing moments in time.

15. What's the best thing about being Canadian?

Losing our healthcare to a conservative Government. I think it's cool being Canadian as I was raised with a lot of thing some people aren't today such as: meals, water and family. But there was a lot of racism where I grew up. Cousins of mine being beaten for being brown, being called nigger by store clerks. So that aspect was hard when I was a kid. But If I knew then what I knew now. I would not have wondered why these people were so angry at me. Ignorance is bliss and ignorance breeds faster than rabbits on Viagra.

16. What are the five things that you could not live without?

Oxygen, Brain, Heart, Blood, and a fertilized egg. Material things can help but you need these five to even have a concept of reality.

17. Here's a tough one...Spongebob or Patrick?

Mr. Krabs

18. What's next for Dave Brownsound?

Same old, music and a quest for knowledge of this heated rock I live on.

19. What do you think of TheresNoSolution.com?

It' always cool to see you've helped to inspire creation whether it be a website or anything for that matter. I wish you the best of luck.
