Deryck Interview from England's Metro

That’s an unusual way of spelling Derek.
Yes, it’s how my mum chose to spell it on my birth certificate. If I was going to change the spelling, I’d change the whole thing because ‘Deryck Whibley’ isn’t that cool a name.

What is March Of The Dogs all about?
We didn’t just want to have a collection of 12 songs – we wanted to write about a theme. We came up with the idea of doing a very personal record that reflects the confusion and frustration in modern society.

Are you confused and frustrated yourself?
I wrote out about 20 pages of what I found confusing and frustrating in my life. There were really deeply held personal things that scared me. The first thing I did was a song called Dear Father. I’ve never met my father – he split before I was born. I grew up with a single teenage mother and writing a song about it had always scared the s*** out of me. I realised that when anything scares you, that’s the best thing you can possibly do. It’s an album about my view of existence.

You were caught up in an armed conflict while filming a documentary in the Congo. What was that like?
Our hotel was hit by mortar rounds. We were hiding in the bath tub and were very close to dying. It was crazy.

Does an experience like that give you a new outlook on life?
I grew up hating war and being against it but actually being in one makes you see how horrible it really is. It made me hate war even more, which is probably why I hate George Bush more now.

What has been your most extravagant purchase?
It would be the house in LA. I’m also really into Les Paul guitars – I’ve got Les Pauls from 1955 to 1963. They range from $15,000 (£7,500) to $60,000 (£30,000). I used them on the new record but now they’re all sitting in the basement while I’m on tour.

Does your house really have ten bathrooms?
I don’t know. I don’t think so. I think that’s exaggerated.

Do you buy your own toilet paper or do you get an assistant to do it?
I haven’t bought toilet paper in a while. We have a housekeeper.

That’s handy if you’ve got ten bathrooms.
What you read in the magazines isn’t true. I don’t think we have ten bathrooms. I don’t know where they got it from. It sounded like a great house but I don’t think they were describing our place. I think we have around five bathrooms.

When was the last time you rode on a skateboard?
Last year. I don’t do it much any more. I own a bunch but don’t use them.

Do you think Paris Hilton should have been sent to jail?
I don’t know. I don’t even know what she did – but it seems to me that they made an example out of her.

When was your last brush with the law?
Two years ago, we were in France and the bass player, Cone, and I got into a fight with two security guards at our show. The cops arrived, put me in handcuffs and I spent a night in jail. We were drunk. Cone pushed over a sign or something and the security guard freaked out. We didn’t even know what the f*** he was saying, so he started pushing us and it turned into a fight.

When was the last time you got so drunk you threw up?
I hardly ever throw up. I usually pass out. The last time I got really drunk was two days ago with my parents, which was an odd experience. They’ve got a cabin in the woods in Toronto and I went up there for a couple of days to relax but ended up partying hard. I was drinking beer, daiquiris, wine and vodka that night.

What are the pros and cons of being Canadian?
We can go round the world and people don’t immediately hate us. We also have great bacon and maple syrup. I’m not really into hockey but that’s a big pro for a lot of people. The only con is it’s very cold. There’s nothing wrong about growing up in Canada.

So, Deryck's dad LEFT. Alright. Got it. And his mum has since married, because he refers to "his parents" in the second-last question, meaning his mom and step-dad.
