how do you get the guitar tone as used on the live versions of 'over my head' with a Line6 spider iii 30watt amp & Gibson Les Paul Studio guitar... ? (or the studio version..)

I don't know... Crank up the gain, bass at 8, treble at 7, mid at 4, guitar in treble with tone at 7? Those are usually my settings when I try to get that crunchy tone of Over My Head. You might need some pedals too, but I'm not a big enough of a gear head to tell you what to get.

Something Marshally/High gain, treble humbucking pickups (you're set with teh Gibson) with a mildly saturated distorted tone. You'll get close to the sound with your set up but it won't be the EXACT sound ever.

Yeah, marshall amps are so hard to imitate. I don't want to discourage you, but you'll never get the same sound.
My best advise for you is that you should try to save money for a marshall head, I know it's fuckin' expensive, but it does worth it ! Or you could buy a tube preamp (I don't remember the name, sorry) that has some great emulations.
