I'm really struggling with how I feel about the song. On the one hand, it's EXACTLY what I wanted, I'd even go so far as to say it's the perfect sum 41 song basically.

There's just one problem.....Deryck's voice sounds completely different to me. I feel like the yelling in the verses should be just as intense as Still waiting or I'm not the one, but it just sounds....nasally and whiny?

At first I thought it was just an effect or the mix that made it sound that way. But listening back to chuck and DTLI again, it just sounds way different. Does anyone else hear it or am I going nuts? I'm really bummed because I LOVE the song otherwise.

There's so much going on in the video, I didn't even notice that! Although, it's not as obvious as Blood In My Eyes where the girl goes from being beat and bloodied wandering the desert to arriving at the guy's house... not that way, haha.

I noticed there was something different in Deryck's voice and I thought it was just due to bad quality on YouTube. Then the official video and song dropped and I realized it's supposed to be that way. It's got some distortion effect that makes it fuzzy, similar to the intro to No Reason. He's really screaming out those verses though, maybe it would take away from the power of the chorus if it didn't have that effect?

After many listens, the verses are actually my favourite part of the song, haha.

I've been analyzing the lyrics for a bit and came up with an interesting (at least I think so) theory.
To me it feels like the lyrics are taken from two different perspectives. The verses sound like it could be his body telling him he's in bad shape and that even though he thinks he's doing fine he's about to reach the point of no return. The chorus brings up another perspective, which appears to be coming from very deep inside of him. It's almost like his (sub)conscience got the point his body was trying to make and begging him to leave this vicious cycle and re-enter the real world.

The bridge seems to be his body giving him one final warning.

Do you guys remember when Deryck said he had to learn to sing again? Well, that wasn't bullshit. He had to take singing lessons for the first time ever after his collapse. Re-learning everything might have altered his singing voice a bit, but more importantly, he shows that his vocals have even more depth than before. The fact that we can hear something totally new from him is a "wow" for me. :ohshiz:

The screaming might not sound familiar, but isn't this song about just that? Moving on from the past to start fresh?

As always I'm fashionably late to the party.
I had to start my workshift the minute they posted the song online, wich didn't stop me from listening to it every half hour in the bathroom of course. My boss didn't even notice me rockin out in there :devious:

Hearing that guitar in the beginning for the first time made me so happy in an instant. I feel like the song/performance has way more energy than any other song on SBM and that's saying a lot, since that's my favourite album.

I feel like there's not much more to say about the song that hasn't been said already. I think it's perfect. Alltough a friend of mine who isn't too much into Sum 41 but loves the SBM album for some reason, said he didn't like the song cause it reminded him of chuck. I stared at him like a mad man after that comment.

Has anybody found any live videos of the song being played yet? I'm desperate to see them play it live

Damn, I feel so bad that some people bitched that this album took long time to get done when Deryck had to re-learn everything again. I love how fucking gritty the vocals are in the verses... And I thought Skumfuk had gritty vocals in the first verse but they're nothing compared to this!

The more I listen to Fake My Own Death the more I freaking love it. And the reaction online is crazy positive also. Can't wait for the album.

Hello, a new Skumfuk here! About the new song, I honestly was expecting a serious video because of the lyrics and how instense the song was, and I got surprised to find a funny video instead! And I love that combination! This is what Sum 41 used to be about! back in the days of Still Waiting, "are u feeling me?" xD. I'm sure this new album will be a blast!!

P.S. I jump from my seat each time I hear the first guitar in the intro of the song. The rhythm change is way too violent! and I really love that ;).

First live clip I've been able to find, look at the kid in the purple shirt going apeshit on stage.

Whenever I hear a change in Deryck's voice it takes me a few listens to get used to, but that's one of the things that I can appreciate about the band now and Deryck as a singer. Even after all these years he can still surprise us and not sound the same on every song (Mark Hoppus) or sound new in a drastic way too far from the norm (Tom Delonge). Sorry for that comparison hardcore Blink fans. :silly:

Nice find! I searched yesterday and couldn't find any. That kid in the purple is definitely doing it right, haha. Whoever doesn't end up like that during this song live, all I have to say is, "what are you doing with your life?!?!".

Almost 1 million views on youtube now. Moving to Hopeless was def the right thing to do.

Much better publicity on Hopeless than Island that's for sure.

Thanks, sounds great live. Would be nice to hear more of Dave doing backing vocals on this one. I want those foam fingers to do a 41 salute with haha

From what I heard on the song I don't think it's a change in Deryck's voice I think it's a change in the way it's been mixed. I think it probably sounded better on the last album but that's just my opinion.

Now to wait until October before listening to any more tracks haha. This will be tough.

Dual singing, good vocal melodies, catchy riff; that bridge was awesome that it deserved a solo but oh well. Solid track overall, The Sums did not disappoint. Even more hyped about the new album now.

Yeah, they're obviously better in marketing at Hopeless Record. I'm glad this song really got attention. (Although, if we stay at your comparison: I think BIME is better :silly: )
