Serious Question

Post by Madjid »

What is the difference between "Merry Christmas" and "Happy Holidays" and why would some people be annoyed by saying Merry Christmas and prefer Happy Holidays instead?!

Happy Holidays takes into account those who aren't Christian or Western enough to celebrate 'Christmas' (ie. most of the world).

Personally, I don't give a shit. I still say Merry Christmas for indeed it is Christmas and I live in the U.K. where Christmas is a national holiday.

I don't mind people that don't celebrate Christmas fair does to them. I just don't like it when they moan about it.

It seems like "Merry Christmas" is making a come back. I've been to a lot of stores and I've recieved a lot of "merry Christmas's" even Target had a big hanging sign inside the door way saying "Merry Christmas."

I don't know why, but Happy Holidays is an almost exclusively American thing. Here in Britain nobody says this... Merry Christmas is the norm pretty much everywhere East of the Atlantic I think.

Over here, I find that people say Merry Christmas more and not Happy Holidays.

Don't you guys say 'Happy Christmas' though? My aunt's husband is British and he always said it. Unless, well, it's personal preference.

I even heard they're trying to refer to Christmas trees as 'Holiday Trees' now.

It's just because in America/Canada there is a great deal more diversity in terms of race and religion than here in the UK. Even some of my Muslim friends celebrate 'Christmas' to a certain extent because everybody else here does.

Because political correctness turns people into pussies and they think that if they don't say what's politically "correct", they will offend somebody. It makes me sick to my stomach. Everyone needs to grow a pair and realize that the only people they're offending when they use politically "incorrect", better known as correct terms, are the assholes that started the politically "correct" term. What the fuck is a Holiday Tree?????? What other holiday involves Christmas trees??? Pathetic. Just pathetic.

If anything, political correctness is offending. If you're black, would you rather be called black, or African American? I know my black friends all prefer black, because that's what they are, African Americans are direct descendants of Africa, so someone who is black whose family has lived in America for decades could be offended by that statement. I know I would be. It's just so wrong to be politically correct. I hate it.
