seasons start on:

Winter solstice - longest period of darkness
vernal (spring) equinox -day/night are same length
Summer solstice- longest period of light
autumnal equinox -day/ night are same length

that's for north america, i don't know about the rest of the world. shouldn't it be different for each hemisphere because of the earth's axis?

I don't even know if our seasons start on those days. They start on the first day of December, March, June and September. Maybe by coincidence those days are the days that you said, equinoxs or whatever.
