Blackray

Post by Gregorovich »

Some of you will probably know Blackray as the guy who did loads of awesome Sum 41 acoustic+ covers such as Back Where I Belong, The Hell Song and Happiness Machine. He's also done covers of Rise Against, SR-71 and loads of other bands as well as his own stuff.

Well, he's got a single out from his first album (coming Spring '13) and it sounds pretty damn good!

I like his covers, but this song... I don't like it at all. Especially the chorus, sry, but I think that's horrible.

I like it, not a fan of some of the guitar tones on it but the song itself and vocals are awesome.

I love his covers but I don't like this song. It isn't great but I wouldn't call it horrible, either.

i don't if its his actual voice but it sounds like there's a lot of autotune. i don't like all the fake instruments that are obviously fake.

I like it. Great songwriting. His voice sucks though, in that he can't bring ANY emotion through it.

Great songwriter/ arranger. Bad Performer. But I do like the guy, very much so.

He's back at it again!

Yeah, he's started to release some of his own material, which haven't been as big success as his covers. But even if you hate his original songs, you can't say his covers suck!

Niiice. I also thought the piano work on his latest original song, The End, was really good. Shame he's still messing with his voice.

Maybe Blackray should do the full Screaming Bloody Murder album and put it up for download like Odi Acoustic did with Blink-182.

Once you realize he's German and thus speaks with an accent, his voice is actually intriguing to listen to. It's not lack of emotion, forced, etc. He just has an accent.

As I listen to more and more songs from him, his voice more and more annoys me... I liked his covers Sick of Everyone, No Reason and especially Happiness Machines, even this Reason to Believe cover has a good part (after "Yeah, give me reason to believe"), but I think I like them because of the original music, he just uses them well with other instruments and other beats, rhythm. But I don't like his original songs and his voice is really tiring... (his accent doesn't concern me at all, I think it's not so bad)

He claims to not use autotune, I think his accent and singing style makes it sound like that sometimes.

As for fake instruments, it's possible he just has a low budget and can't afford to purchase/learn more instruments.

Anyway, love this guy's covers, I'm sure his original songs will be just as good. Been subscribed to this guy for awhile, glad to see he's gaining some popularity.

That's ridiculous, auto-tune couldn't be more clear in most of his songs. That's the reason why I'm so annoyed by some of his covers, auto-tune sounds so horrible in them... He's definitely correcting his pitch and not the right way.

^This.

Maybe its not specifically "Autotune", but there are other pitch correcting software plugins that he could be using. Example, Melodyne. Thousands of artists use pitch correction, but they/their engineers know how to hide it so its not so obvious. This guy sounds like he just slapped the plugin on the track and entered his key signature and left it at factory settings. i can't make it a minute through any of his songs because its so horrendous.

and for the fake instruments, its not about getting the most expensive virtual instruments. I can make stock EXS24 drum kits or strings in Logic sound decently real using humanization, hold and velocity techniques. This guy should look this stuff up because badly faked sounds make or break the whole song.
