Dave Q&A

Post by Heather »

Dave was nice enough to answer a few questions for my site

FC Link to Q&A

- What led you to choose the guitar and when did you start playing?
I think mainly it was an impulse choice, I don't think I quite understood the amount of psychological help the guitar would help me find in myself. So it's a hard to answer what led me there. I would say nothing spoke to me more than music, so I would have ended up with something musical.

- Which Sum41 song can you relate to the most and why?
"Makes No Difference" I think that personifies the caribbean mindset most accurately.

- How did your experience in the Congo change your outlook on life?
I always had a good idea of what was happening in the world but being there showed me that sending money to a country won't solve all of the problems. As far as my mindset, it made me feel fortunate to be alive and call a great place my home.

- How did the studio recording process differ from Sum41 to The Brown Brigade?
Brown Brigade was a little more quick, we didn't use as much pro tools magic. Basically we went for a good raw first album sound.

- In your opinion, what is the most rewarding aspect in being a musician?
The fact that I can own an apartment have nothing in it besides a guitar and be happy.

- How has the industry changed (good and bad) during your career?
I was there for the fall of the industry with burning and mp3 players. The Irony is one of the first things we were given by Island was an mp3 player. So when the "heads" got to greedy the prices went up. I remember looking for a Fear Factory CD and feeling that $40 was an insane amount of money to ask a teenager to pay. This type of thing was happening all over the world and finally the people had enough and started the free sharing of the files. I tend to look a most things as they are, to spend time labeling them bad or good tends to take away from the question why.

- What projects do you have coming up in 2009?
The New Blackjacket record "Favela"
The New Hell Yeah Fuck Yeah record "The New Rock and Roll"
The new Burnouts record TBA
Demoing the new Brown Brigade material
Writing and recording a full length with the Organ Thieves
Solo stuff on myspace
The New Caution Inc. record "Too Soon?"

sweet. is he officially in the organ theives?
Children of the beast embrace,
To scorn and the human race,
Consume the light that hugs the earth,
And aid the womb in giving birth,
To a group that will appear,
And guide you through this final year,
The dark armies then will come,
When the sum is 41

Cool interview. He's going to be busy haha. But I guess besides of Brown Brigade, Organ Thieves and those solo stuff he talks about... all others are records he's producing right? Cuz he's been only a touring guitarist for Blackjacket and I've never heard of those other bands, so those are probably young bands he's producing or whatever.
